Urinary Incontinence

What is Urinary Incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine due to a loss of bladder control. It can range from occasional urine leakage while coughing or sneezing to a sudden, strong urge to urinate that is difficult to control. Although common, urinary incontinence is not a normal part of aging and can often be effectively treated.

Types of Urinary Incontinence

Stress Incontinence

This occurs when physical activities such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising, or lifting heavy objects put pressure on the bladder, causing urine leakage.

Urge Incontinence (Overactive Bladder)

A sudden and intense urge to urinate followed by involuntary leakage. Patients may feel the need to urinate frequently, including during the night.

Overflow Incontinence

This occurs when the bladder does not empty completely, leading to frequent dribbling or leakage of urine.

Functional Incontinence

A person may be unable to reach the toilet in time due to physical, mobility, or cognitive limitations, resulting in urine leakage.

Mixed Incontinence

A combination of stress and urge incontinence, where patients experience symptoms of both conditions.

Common Causes

Urinary incontinence can result from various underlying conditions, including:

  • Weak pelvic floor muscles
  • Enlarged prostate (BPH)
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Neurological disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Menopause
  • Bladder or prostate surgery
  • Aging-related changes

Symptoms

Symptoms may vary depending on the type of incontinence and can include:

  • Sudden uncontrollable urge to urinate
  • Frequent urination
  • Night-time urination (Nocturia)
  • Difficulty holding urine
  • Constant dribbling of urine
  • Feeling that the bladder does not empty completely

Diagnosis & Evaluation

A thorough assessment helps identify the cause and severity of urinary incontinence. Evaluation may include:

  • Detailed medical history
  • Physical examination
  • Urine analysis
  • Bladder diary
  • Ultrasound examination
  • Urodynamic studies
  • Cystoscopy when required

Treatment Options

Treatment is customized based on the type and severity of incontinence.

Available Treatments

  • Lifestyle and dietary modifications
  • Pelvic floor exercises (Kegel exercises)
  • Bladder training
